ABSTRACT

Aim: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of the mandibular third molars position in according to the Winter and Pell & Gregory classification, and to determine the levels of difficulty for exodontia through the Pederson index. Materials and Methods: Radiographic, cross-sectional and retrospective study evaluated 100 panoramic radiographs of patients between 15 and 61 years old, from dental records seen at the Oral Surgery department in the period from 2015 to 2017. The panoramic radiographs were evaluated using ImageJ software regarding the positioning of the lower third molars by the Winter and Pell & Gregory classification, while the level of difficulty was evaluated by the Pederson index. The results obtained were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. Results: The highest prevalence of included third molars was observed in women, with an age average of 26 years. Regarding the position of the included teeth, the vertical position (44.0%), level A (74.7%), and class III (69.9%) were the most prevalent. In the Pederson scale, the "very difficult" surgical difficulty was the most found. Discussion: results suggest establishing better surgical planning and prognosis for patients, minimizing the possibility of complications during and after extractions of mandibular third molars. Conclusion: Both classifications help the dental surgeon to establish better planning and prognosis for patients. The applicability of panoramic radiographs, associated with clinical evaluation, justifies a fewer possibility of complications in the lower third molar post-extraction

ABSTRACT

Introduction: periapical cysts are classified as inflammatory, odontogenic cysts; periapical lesions are the most common lesions in the oral cavity. These lesions are asymptomatic; radiographically, they present radiolucent, unilocular, well-defined images and they surround the apices of devitalized teeth. To correctly diagnose a periapical cyst it is also necessary to perform a histopathological examination. Methods: the present study describes the clinical case of a twelve year-old female patient who presented an extensive restoration of composite resin and a periapical lesion in tooth No. 16 (approximately 15.2 x 14.6 mm), with the presence of palatine fistula. Based on the clinical and radiographic diagnosis of the periapcal cyst, we first opted for conventional endodontic treatment. After successive changes of intracanal medication (using 2% chlorhexidine gel and calcium hydroxide) the fistula did not regress and thus it was decided to enucleate the lesion; the material was then sent for histopathological examination. Results: after two years follow-up it was possible to verify that the treatment had been effective. Conclusion: a correct diagnosis depends on technical knowledge and clinical experience; it is often necessary to work jointly with several different specialists to solve a case (AU).

ABSTRACT

Introduction Dizziness can be characterized as a balance disorder that causes discomfort, leading to several functional limitations. Currently, vestibular rehabilitation has been highlighted as a possible treatment. Objective Analyze the effects of completing a vestibular rehabilitation treatment protocol on quality of life and postural balance in patients with vestibular complaints, as well as to compare these effects between the patients taking or not taking antivertigo drugs. Methods A nonrandomized controlled trial was performed with 20 patients previously diagnosed with vestibular diseases. Information regarding vertigo symptoms, quality of life as assessed through the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, visual analog scale of dizziness, and stabilometry using force platform was collected. Patients were treated for 12 weeks by a customprotocol. The sample was divided into two groups according to the use (medicated group, n = 9) or not (control group, n = 11) of antivertigo drugs. Results There was improvement in quality of life (p < 0.001) and intensity of dizziness (p = 0.003) with the intervention. An improvement of postural balance was observed through functional tests. However, no statistically significant difference was noted in stabilometry. When both groups were compared, no statistically significant differences between the variations of the variables analyzed were found in the re-evaluation session. Conclusion Quality of life and postural balance are improved with intervention. However, this improvement is not associated with pharmacologic treatment.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to reflect on how social memory was articulated by groups of colored people and groups of white people during the Brazilian Belle Époque. This period, which begins inthe late nineteenth century and ends in the thirties, was characterized by exaltation and the adoption of the European culture, particularly the French. However, how to "Europeanise" a country that had a huge contingent of colored and mulatto people strongly influenced by the African culture? One aims, in this work, to reflect on how the capoeira, music and confraternitieselaborated social memories - especially the common, practical, personal and historical oral ones of the colored community and how the Brazilian elite, through legal measures and architectural changes, made use of documentary and public historical memories to generate forgetfulness ofpart of the population that did not fit the new national identity project.
